Why take FE / AP
At Japanese IT companies, FE (基本情報) and AP (応用情報) are common requirements for engineering promotions and the basis for technical-allowance pay bumps. They are widely recognised as proof of competence from junior to mid-level SE / programmer roles.
IPA-administered information-processing exams are explicitly listed in Japan's Highly Skilled Foreign Professional points calculation table — each qualification you hold adds +5 points, capped at +10 points. Passing both FE and AP secures the full +10. This directly accelerates access to the Highly Skilled visa and permanent residency (check the latest values on the Immigration Services Agency site).
